St. Cecilia Cathedral is located in Omaha
Nebraska. When it was completed in 1959, it was ranked as the tenth
largest church in the United States.
The building was begun
in 1905, and took over 50 years to build, finally being consecrated in 1959.
The architectural style is Spanish Renaissance Revival, a
style prevalent in Mexico and
South America, but largely unexplored in the U.S. It was one of the
first buildings in this style in the U.S. This style didn’t become
prominent in the U.S. until after the Panama California Exposition at San
Diego in 1915. Only then did Spanish architecture become the rage.
Indeed, the style of St. Cecilia looks like it might actually belong in
Spain.
The church was
designed by architect Thomas Rogers Kimball, an eminent American architect,
who not only studied architecture, but studied Fine Art in Boston and had
further art studies at the famous Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris.
Kimball's
beautiful design of St. Cecilia is a stunning example of church
architecture. The building is listed on the National Register of
Historic Places.
