Michael's Gate is the last standing gate in
Bratislava and is one of the original main entrances into the city's Old
Town. As part of Bratislava's medieval fortification from 1300,
it ranks among the oldest town buildings. Originally the fortification
in front of Michael's Gate was closed off by a drawbridge over a moat.
During the coronation of 19 Hungarian kings, the ruler would be crowned at
Bratislava's St. Martin's Cathedral and begin a procession though town, with
an important stop at St. Michael's Gate to pledge his oath to the
archbishop.
Today, the tower
houses the Exhibition of Weapons of the Bratislava City Museum.
