Chester is one of the most picturesque towns in England.  Situated on a rocky sandstone height, the town is encircled by ancient Roman walls, entered by four gates.  Chester is particularly noted for the finest examples of medieval half-timbered buildings in Europe.  The most famous of these are the section known as "The Rows", which are very much like a modern shopping mall.
